Victoria's QuestionI'm frustrated by my very thick, curly hair. Is there anything that would help take the bulk out?My hair is so frustrating to work with! It's very thick, and curly, and a bit below my shoulders.
I'm wondering if long layers would help take the bulk out? Maybe make the curls a bit more wavy or "stretched out"?
Please let me know what to do with it.
Thanks! Victoria
Nicole's Answer:Dear VictoriaIf your hair is really dense and curly, cutting layers will only put the weight in different areas.
Without seeing your hair it is hard to say for sure but in theory the only thing that will "stretch out" the curl is weight. Layers lighten the hair by removing the length/weight. So, another option would be to grow your hair to create the weight, then cut long layers that would hit you where your length is now.
The only way to take out bulk is to cut with the curls, in the mid-shaft section of the hair.
This should only be done by a licensed stylist who knows how to follow the curl pattern. Thinning shears (scissors with a lot of little teeth) do remove hair and in fact make the overall density less, but they disrupt the curl pattern by turning your pretty "s" shape curl into an "8", exploding the curl and making it poufy.
Best wishes, Nicole
