Nicole Siri's
Tips for Styling Curly Hair

Serene's Question

How can I have my hair out of my face at work, but nice and glossy and bouncy for play?

Hi. I have awful, awful hair!

Its long (half way down my back), fine, and almost black with some highlights and sun bleaching. But there's lots of it.

On a good day I have well-defined, large curls. On a bad day, I have a whole lotta frizz. The top is getting a bit flat.

Problem is, I am a nurse, and the general consensus at work is either to cut it rather short, which looks silly on me, or to have it in a ponytail ... hence the long tresses.

I have found though that not only is the ponytail unflattering (unless my hubby plaits it for me), but it goes like an afro out the back of my head after a while, and as my hair is so abundant, the hair elastics never stay in for long.

I just want to be able to have my hair out of my face at work, but nice and glossy and bouncy for play. I currently use Schwartzkopf extra care for Colour, and wash it as little as I can, as shampoo makes it limp and frizzy at the same time?!??

I looked up some of the products you mentioned, but can't find them here in Australia.

Can you help me find something flattering, and not too hot that I can adapt? I am sooo tempted to shave it off again.
Serene

Nicole's Answer:

Dear Serene

I apologize for the delay in responding to your concerns about your hair.

First, please don't shave it off again! (I hope I'm not too late) Curly hair can be manageable.

I would love to say that any of the product lines I mention for use ship to Australia, but I don't know that for sure.

What I do know is that I ship to Australia, and my book Strictly Curls was made especially for women in your situation. Strictly Curls is a collection of 14 different hair styles. Each comes with step-by-step written instructions as well as photos! It is an easy read and there are many very easy styles to try. I highly recommend it!

If you are in search of a new short hair cut, I recommend checking out some photos of people with similar face shape and curl shape to yours. Then, take the photos in to your stylist and get their best recommendation for you after they have analyzed your curl, texture and shape.

Best of luck,
Nicole
