Nicole Siri's
Tips for Styling Curly Hair

Kylie's Question

Can you suggest a cute, above the shoulder style for a girl with thick, curly, blonde ringlets?

Hi.

I am 16 years old with thick, curly, blonde ringlets. I usually wear my hair shoulder length with a few layers. I like this style, but I would like a change.

I really love all of the new, popular "bob" styles that many celebrities are wearing (like Katie Holmes new style). However I know my hair would never look like that.

I really would like a cute, above the shoulder style. My hair does curl up a good bit when it dries. I would really appreciate some suggestions (and maybe some pictures to demonstrate.)

Thanks so much!
Kylie

Nicole's Answer:

Dear Kylie

Sorry it took so long to get back with you. I have been traveling!

A hair cut should really work with your face shape ... I would get a bunch of your favorite hair style pictures together and take them in to your stylist to see if he/she can come up with a haircut that combines the pictures to work with your face shape.

Some fun things to do with curly hair to alter you curl would be: pin curls -

To achieve a pin curl you would take about 1 inch section of hair and add a little gel to the whole hair shaft (root to ends), enough to make the hair damp, not wet. Then start at the end of the hair and roll the hair under creating a barrel. Pin the hair to your head by inserting a duck bill clip through the barrel and attach it to the hair closest to the scalp. Allow this to dry and take it out - you will have an altered curl pattern. Have fun by using different amounts of hair and making big and small barrels. This is always good to do at night so your hair will be dry when you wake in the morning.

Another way to alter you curl is by using a big curling iron. Use a curling iron with an inch to an inch and a half barrel. After you have diffused your curl dry, use the curling iron randomly round your head. This will soften tight curly hair and give it a softer feel.

Good luck,
Nicole
