Nicole Siri's
Tips for Styling Curly Hair

Karen's Question

Home hair colouring disaster! It went too dark! How can I lighten it without bleach?

I tried colouring my curly Cuban-caucasian hair myself - disaster! It's too dark. How can I get it lighter without bleach? I don't want it to dry out.

Thanks Nicole!
Karen

Nicole's Answer:

Dear Karen

Oops!

Hopefully it was a semi-permanent color. It should wash out by itself within 12 shampoos.

If not, there is really only one thing you can try yourself, at home.

Get a clarifying shampoo. Wash your hair with it, leave it in, put a shower cap on and blow the hot air from your blow dryer on it. The hot air will help open the cuticle and possibly release enough of the color where it is not so dark. Rinse out the clarifying shampoo and condition.

If that doesn't work I would seek professional assistance.

There are a few professional products that will take out color. These are less invasive than bleach. Your stylist should have one of these products: Eliminate or Modulate. These are the two I am familiar with. They basically shrink the color molecule, allowing the color to slip out of the hair.

Good Luck. I hope the clarifying shampoo works!

Take Care,
Nicole
