Nicole Siri's
Tips for Styling Curly Hair

Julie's Question

Can you help me find a style and product for big, frizzy, curly hair?

I stumbled upon your site because I am completely frustrated about my hair.

I have shoulder-lenghth hair (when it's dry) in long layers. It is extremely thick and coarse (I am Caucasian - Italian/Hungarian - but have been asked by former stylists if I am part African-American descent because of my hair's properties).

I have always struggled with my hair being "big" and frizzy.

I find that using conditioner in my hair makes it bigger! I was really happy with Nexxus's Versastyler, until recently when they went "over the counter" (I think they changed the formula because my hair has NOT been the same).

Now I'm struggling to find a product and style. I always want to go for a shorter style because I don't want to struggle with my hair, but it always turns out looking like a mushroom!

I would love to find a good stylist, but I don't know where to go (I live in the Philadelphia area.)

I feel like I've just vented and haven't asked you a specific question, but I would appreciate any advice you have (style, products... anything!)

Thank you so much.
Julie

Nicole's Answer:

Dear Julie

Sounds like you are frustrated with your curls.

From what you have said it sounds like you need to get on a GOOD deep treatment regimen. Be patient with the deep treatment. When you are changing a product you need to give your hair time to adjust. Make sure you use a product that is made for curly hair.

To list a few products to look into: Mop Top, Jessicurl, Ouidad, Curlisto - all of these products are made to treat curly hair. As you know, curly hair and straight hair are not the same and need different ingredients. Once your hair is fed the nutrients it needs you should see more control in your curl and less frizz.

With that said, look at your curl pattern. Does it have an "s" curve or a "z" shape pattern? If it has an "s" curl you're in good shape - there are ways to cut and style your hair to help with the frizz and fullness.

Good news - I work in Virginia and am only about 3 hours away! I would love to take a look at your hair in person. I work at Salon Nordine and Day Spa of Reston, 703-437-6444. I work only Saturdays right now. I look forward to meeting you. Until then, start on the deep treatment.

Take Care,
Nicole
