Heidie's QuestionIs there a haircut that can be put up and left down, for a stay at home mom with long, thick curly hair?I am a stay at home mom with 1 year old twins, a two year old, and a 13 year old. I don't have a lot of time to spend on myself and less on my hair.
My hair is very thick, coarse, and dry. My face shape is diamond. My hair when brushed out dry is almost to my waist, when wet it is to my waist, when diffused with styling product it is below my bra strap.
I had it cut into long layers about 2 years ago and it hasn't been cut since. The longest layer is right on my shoulder.
I am in desperate need of a haircut.
I don't want to go real short because I like to put it up in a banana clip sometimes (that's my husband's favorite syle). It's even too long now for the clip though.
I have bought numerous magazines and surfed the net for inspiration to the best cut for me and it has been fruitless.
My hair is medium auburn. When I had a social life people would rave about my hair, but I no longer have the time to spend and need something that can be put up and left down. Any suggestions would be great.
I live in a rural town and the hair salons are few. No one I have talked to knows how to cut curly hair dry and everyone seems to want to use the thinning shears immediately, which in my case causes my hair to widen.
Thanks for any suggestions or advice in advance. Heidie
Nicole's Answer:Dear HeidieThere is no one busier than a mother with twins and two other children. My hat is off to you.
Sounds like you have great hair. It is definitely in need of a hair cut!
I would definitely cut the length to a more manageable length. If you remove some of the length your options to putting it up are greater.
I would suggest cutting your length just below your bra strap. That way you have room for "shrinkage".
Then re-shape your layers, using your shortest layer as your guide. So your layers will rest shoulder length and longer.
Angle up the front to give you a little play around your face, possibly cut a long bang section around your lips. This could bounce up around your nose or eyes which will highlight your eyes and widen the forehead area. A diamond shaped face usually means a smaller forehead, prominent cheeks and smaller chin. You would want this "bang" area to hit you above or below your most prominent region.
As far as thinning your hair with thinning shears, I'm sure you have read it's a NEVER, because just like you said it does make the hair wider. It actually explodes the curl pattern, so instead of having your nice "s" pattern you can get more of a figure "8" pattern. It ruins the controlled curls.
You can check out a few web sites for salons that specialize in cutting into curls.
If you are close to Virginia I would love to meet you and cut your hair. I work at Salon Nordine and Day Spa of Reston. Otherwise, check out curlyhairsalon.com; naturallycurly.com; ouidad.com.
Any of these site will be able to refer you to a salon that cuts curly hair. It is up to you to be specific when asking for a stylist who cuts with the curl without using thinning shears.
 | I have attached a picture of "Ashley", a model in my book Strictly Curls.
Her hair is similar to what I am describing, only your length would be longer. And you could modify the angle around your face like I mentioned above.
Best wishes, Nicole
