Nicole Siri's
Tips for Styling Curly Hair

Erin's Question

Is there a way to salvage destroyed curls without having to start styling from the beginning?

Hi Nicole,

My hair is a little shorter than shoulder-length with curls that vary between being reasonably tight ringlets and defined waves, depending on the product.

After years of experimenting I finally figured out how to have soft, defined curls without crunch. I was so excited!

The only problem is now my boyfriend, sorority sisters, and co-workers can't keep their hands off. If one more person runs their fingers through my curls, or if my mother comes up behind me with a hairbrush again, I think I might attack.

Is there a way to salvage destroyed curls without having to start styling from the beginning?
Erin

Nicole's Answer:

Dear Erin

Yes, there is a way to salvage coveted curl!

If you are applying your styling lotion from root to end, working it through section by section; then all you will need to do is spritz a little water on the areas that have been played with. (Check out some of my other Q&A on styling curly hair/product application)

The water will reactivate the styling lotion in the hair.

How long you let your friends/family play with your hair will determine how much water to spray and if you will need to re-sculpt some of the curls. To re-sculpt a curl you simply take the curl and wrap it around one of your fingers, then gently unravel it and let it be. Keep in mind, re-wetting also means de-crunching your curl again.

If asking your friends and family not to touch your hair is out of the question, you could always start petting their hair and see what happens. Maybe then they'll get a clue!

Good Luck!
Nicole
