Clare's QuestionHumidity makes my hair get 'big' easily. How can I avoid this? Also, would it be possible to get some sort of fringe across my forehead with curly ringlet hair?I have curly ringlets that when dry fall about 2 inches past my shoulders. Presently my hair is layered with a side parting and it is neither too thick nor too thin.
However I live in Singapore so my hair is affected by the humidity and tends to get 'big' easily. How can I avoid this?
Secondly, at the moment fringes (bangs) are very popular in girls my age. Would it be possible to get some sort of fringe across my forehead with curly ringlet hair? I have quite a round face and large forehead. I do not want to straighten a fringe everyday, so wash and wear would be preferred. Would I be able to acheive this with my type of hair?
Thanks for the advice, Clare
Nicole's Answer:Dear ClareI understand the humidity over there. I use to live on Saipan in the Marianna islands and it is HOT!
Here's a little hair 101 for ya! Essentially, if your hair does not have enough moisture in it your hair will go searching for it. This is why your hair expands in humidity - it is reaching out for the moisture in the air.
Curly hair by nature is dry and lacks moisture so you need to always be adding moisture to it.
Deva Curl is a product line with a shampoo that is very moisturizing to the hair. I highly recommend it. It is a called Nopoo. This shampoo will not lather so you need to be ready for this. It feels like putting conditioner on you hair. There is no lather because the product does not contain sodium laurel sulfates. This ingredient, as well as others like it, are what make shampoos bubble.
When you use "Nopoo" focus the product on the scalp which is what it is intended for. After massaging it around the entire scalp area pull it through the hair. Once your hair has the moisture and condition it needs you will find your hair will have natural shine, bounce and less frizz.
Another way to help your hair from getting really big is to find a stylist who cuts with the curls to eliminate weight and enhance the curl. This could be tricky because I am not familiar with Singapore or the salons there. I know of salons in Europe and America if you're ever headed to either. You might check out Naturallycurly.com "find a salon" - they may have more information for you.
As well as getting a good cut, product application can help control the curl in humidity. Check out some of my Q&A about styling product application. I would recommend climate control gel from Ouidad.com to help control your curl in the humidity.
As far as cutting bangs ... I think with what you have described to me bangs would work nicely. If you are going to leave the bang section in your natural curl texture then have your stylist cut different lengths, not just one straight line across the forehead. Different lengths create more interest and add a little more flavor.
Enjoy, Nicole
