Nicole Siri's
Tips for Styling Curly Hair

Breanna's Question

My hair is long, very curly, dry, unmanageable and always poofy. Can you help me?

Dear Nicole,

I have such trouble with my hair. I am 17 with my senior year looming ahead and my hair doesn't seem to want to cooperate with me.

My hair is long (when straight reaches past my waist and when let be it reaches mid-back) and very curly with tight ringette curls. I get so fed up with my hair which is always poofy, dry with split ends and unmanageable. I've tried many different types of shampoos and conditioners as well as leave-in conditioners and oils to help with my dry poofy hair but nothing seems to work.

I'm almost afraid to get it cut because I've had such bad experiences with my hair getting cut and 2 days later my hair dislikes the way it is cut.

I refuse to cut my hair short because though it is easier to take care of it inflates to gigantic proportions.

I live in Michigan so the humidity combined with it's wind and high and low temperatures doesn't seem to help. To add to my problem I dislike spending a ton of time trying to take care of my hair.

Can you help me?
Breanna

Nicole's Answer:

Dear Breanna

The first thing about curly hair is it is going to do its own thing. The best thing to do is learn how to work with it.

It sounds like you need a good haircut. If you do not remove your split ends they will continue to split. You can also find a stylist who cuts with the natural curl pattern. This will help enhance your curl while taking out some of the density.

To help eliminate some of the dryness, start a good deep treatment program. I like the Ouidad deep treatment because it works from the inside out. Use it as instructed on the bottle and stick to it for at least 2 months, see how your hair feels after 2 months then reassess your situation. Stay away from oil treatments; they only coat the outer layer of hair and do nothing to actually condition your hair.

A suggestion for your really windy days would be to wear your hair pulled up. The wind really tosses and tangles the curl; I don't think there is any amount of product that would withstand the wind! Check out my book Strictly Curls for some ways to wear your hair up!

Good Luck,
Nicole
