Beverly's QuestionAfter one year at school my 6 year old daughter totally hates her hair. How can I give her back her self-esteem?Hi Nicole,
first of all I am sooo grateful that I found this web site.
I am a mom of three and my oldest daughter is 6 about to be 7. She is going into the first grade and I would love to give her some self confidence.
Ever since she has started school she hates her hair. Of course she is the only little girl with curly hair. She gets it from my mother-in-law, whose hair frizzes worse than my daughter's, so I can't get advice from her.
My daughter has really pretty long, baby fine, curly blonde hair. But it frizzes pretty bad and she really wants to wear it down. But the main thing that bothers me is how just going to school for one year she totally hates her hair.
How can I help her make her hair look really pretty for her new year at school, and give her back her self-esteem?
Also is it true that you never brush curly hair with a brush? How often do you wash it?
Thank you so much. I just really want to help her and I'm totally lost! Beverly
Nicole's Answer:Dear BeverlyI totally understand wanting to help your kids have a good self esteem. I am a mother of three myself.
Check out moptophair.com. This is a great product made for curly hair. Kelly Forman is the creator and has developed a line for kids called "fuzzy ducks" - a very appropriate title!
When you get the gel she offers, work it in section by section and from root to ends, using your hands in a raking motion. Vary the amount you use till you see how the product works.
Always remember to de-crunch her hair after it is dry. To de-crunch simply take your hands, starting in the forehead area (palms down) and pushing down on her hair; move your hand firmly all the way to the back to form a pony tail. Once you have a pony tail take the whole amount of hair and twist it in one direction. Then, let the hair loose and the crunch should be minimized.
You asked about brushing curly hair; only when it is wet. When you brush curly hair dry it expands and disrupts the curl pattern, making it frizz and get big. When the hair is wet use a wide tooth comb or vent brush to get the tangles out.
For more ideas on styling her hair up check out my book strictly curls. It is very user friendly and many of my clients have loved using it for their girls!
Best wishes, Nicole
