Autumn's QuestionWhat is the best look for me, that I can maintain, and still be able to go on a date with fabulous curly hair?Hi,
I am trying to figure out what is the best look for me, that I can maintain, & still be able to go on a date with fabulous curly hair.
I had a hair dresser tell me once that I should get bangs to hide my uneven hair line. I have been trying to figure out how to wear them since the birth of my first child 3 years ago.
I decided to get bangs after having kids so that I could have *something* to style since I usually wear my hair up so that it isn't being grabbed.
Right now my hair is kind of short for my taste but isn't grabbed as easily when worn down by my infant therefore I am wearing it down just a little more often than I did with longer hair.
I usually only get my hair cut every six months (money is an issue). I am weighing the trade offs of getting a cheaper cut more often or continuing to go to this stylist that is good with curly hair just twice a year. My hair is coarse, super thick, and somewhere between wavy & curly (wavier on top, curlier under).
Help me figure out a styling plan to stop looking so homely. Autumn
Nicole's Answer:Dear AutumnThanks for the pictures. It definitely helps to give better advice on styling when I see your face shape and curl type. You have beautiful color and curl! Lucky you!
Before we talk about style I would suggests a good deep treatment regimen to help control the frizzy layer on your hair. Curly hair by nature is dry, so it is very important to put moisture back into the hair.
I like your bang section. It frames your face nicely. However, looking at some of the pictures I think you could do a smaller bang section, half as thick as you have now. or try a longer bang section and sweep them to the side.
Lengthwise, you could do two things to mix it up a bit. Grow your hair out just past your shoulders, then cut "boxy" layers starting with the top layer about 5 inches off the head and angled back so the front layers are shorter than the back. On the flip side you could keep it short and change the layer angle; maybe try an "a-line" cut shorter in the back and longer in the front.
Whichever style you decide try, these styling tips are to create more control and balance.
After you wash and shampoo your hair apply your favorite curly hair styling gel from root to ends. Work it through your hair really well. As your hair is thick you may need to section your hair before applying the gel to get a better application.
Then, take a duck bill clip, a long slender clip, and slide it at the base of your hair right on the top and crown region of your head. This helps the hair to lift off the head. Once the hair on top of the head is dry you can take out the clips. Gently pinch or twist big congested sections of hair to take out the crunchy feel the gel can leave.
Lastly, with you wearing your hair up all the time, check out my book Strictly Curls. It gives step-by-step instruction on how to wear your curly hair up in 14 different styles. It will give you even more options on how to wear you hair from day to day!
Enjoy your curl!
Take Care, Nicole
