Nicole Siri's
Tips for Styling Curly Hair

Ariel's Question

How do you get perfect curls in naturally curly hair?

I have natural curls, but I do not know how to maintain it or style it to get the perfect curls.

I am biracial and my hair is not as thin as my mom's but not as coarse as my dad's.

I've tried almost everything. I even tried a perm to make it straight, but apparently that didn't work.

I want my curls to seem long and free. When I wet my hair it gets really curly but then it dries up and makes my hair seem really short.

Since I don't know how to find the perfect curls I tend to wear my hair in a pony-tail everyday. (Which gets boring really fast.) My hair is really frizzy and "poofy" as I was told since my younger days.

I'm tired of wearing the same style (pony-tail) every day. Please reply to my message and inform me on how to style my curly hair and what products you recommend.

Thank you!
Ariel

Nicole's Answer:

Dear Ariel

I understand your frustration with your hair.

It sounds like the texture of your hair can be challenging for you. Having hair that is not too thin and not coarse sounds to me like a good thing. Right in the middle, and workable!

First, find a good product, one that is made for curly hair.

Find a product without waxes and silicon. These ingredients only coat your hair and suffocate your curls. Naturally curly hair, when at its peak condition, will take on an amazing bounce and shine.

So, get a good deep treatment.

The cuticle of curly hair actually lies open and not closed like straight hair. Curly hair is more vulnerable to damage, and tends to be drier, so you need to be putting the moisture and protein back into the hair.

Next, section your hair with a clip, so you can focus on one section at a time. Take your styling product and apply it from root to ends.

Then let it air dry. You mentioned your hair bounces up a lot when it is dry, but when you let it air dry with the product, applied as I have mentioned, gravity will be your friend.

Along with that, (I know this sounds a little crazy), but while air drying, clip some duck bill clips on the very ends of the curls to create a little resistance for the curl.

Last but not least, spend the money and get a good hair cut! Talk to other curly girls and find out where they get their curls cut.

Hopefully these few tips will help in styling your hair down. If you are looking for other ideas on how to wear your hair up check out www.strictlycurls.com

It is a collection of 14 styles to teach you how to style your hair up.

Let me know how things work for you. Keep smiling! I'm sure you have beautiful curls.
