Nicole Siri's
Tips for Styling Curly Hair

April's Question

Can you tell me how to get soft, loose curls like Sarah Jessica Parker's on Sex and the City?

My hair is fairly long, curly and fine. It's also flat on top and frizzes very easily, but the curl falls out when I sleep.

I'd like a curls that look soft and loose, similar to Sarah Jessica Parker's on Sex and the City.

I have a fairly high forehead and narrow chin. Right now my hair is cut in long layers with bangs. I've tried a variety of products to get rid of the frizz and give my hair some volume, but don't like for my hair to be hard and I don't want the wet look.

I don't have a lot of time to spend on my hair, so I'd like something wash and wear.

What do you recommend?
April

Nicole's Answer:

Dear April

Sara Jessica Parker has great curl. Unless you have her curl, I'm afraid it will take a little more than "wash and wear" to achieve that look. A large curling iron would be a good tool to achieve the loose, soft curls.

The only thing I can suggest if you have tried all kinds of products to get rid of the frizz would be to work on the inner structure of your hair.

To do this, get a great deep treatment one that works from the inside out. I recommend Ouidad Deep Treatment. However, there are many product lines especially for curly hair like MopTop, Jessicurl and Curlisto. They too may have a great deep treatment to try.

Essentially frizzy hair is "empty" hair. The bonds inside the hair are disconnected. You need to connect those bonds with the nutrients from the conditioner to make it strong and help it lie down.

Even then I think you need some kind of product to help control. Try a leave in conditioner, or use the gel again. Just de-crunch it. Most gel gets crunchy so just take your hands and twist out the curls. Take large sections and pinch or twist the hair.

Another option would be to cut you hair shorter. Seek a professional to get their advice on what haircut would work with your face shape.

Good Luck,
Nicole
