Nicole Siri's
Tips for Styling Curly Hair

Anita's Question

How can I find a stylist who'll listen BEFORE cutting my wavy, curly, coarse hair?

Help! I am 29 and haven't found a hairdresser who knows how to cut extremely wavy, curly coarse hair.

I am trying to grow but every time I get it cut it takes me back to square one, even though I tell the hairdresser that I am trying to grow it, so for the past 5 years my hair has remained shoulder length, when I really want to grow it down to my lower back.

And every time they cut my hair I have to pull it back in a ponytail because it looks like a mop.

Help, do you know anyone on the Gold Coast, Qld, who specialises in wavy, curly, coarse hair?

I have found the right products to use just not the right hairdresser. If I could cut my hair myself I would because I know how to cut it but you can't tell a hairdresser that!
Anita

Nicole's Answer:

Dear Anita

I understand your frustration. My hair grows extremely slowly so, when I get a trim, I only want a TRIM!

I would suggest doing a free consultation. Most salons offer this service.

Ask your stylist questions. Get to know if they are conservative as a stylist and if they are a good listener.

In your case, I would avoid the stylist who is in the beauty industry to "create" and prides herself or himself on coming up with the most edgy new haircut.

There are a number of websites you can go to in search of a salon that works with curly hair: Ouidad.com, naturallycurly.com - these two sites have many choices.

However, just because the salon does a lot of curly hair does not mean you're in the clear.

Make sure you take control of which stylist you have cutting your hair.

Interview her/him. Make sure he/she will do what you ask, and be very clear on what you want.

Say "I only want an inch off the ends; I am growing my hair out." Ask to see how much they have cut off on the FIRST snip. If they show you 3 inches and you asked for 1, excuse yourself and speak with the manager.

You do not have to let her finish if you KNOW she is not doing what you asked.

Good Luck,
Nicole
