What causes frizzy hair, and how do you fix it?

Naturally curly hair is dry by nature, so getting the moisture back in the curl is a must. You always need to be moisturizing it.

If your hair does not have enough moisture of its own, it will go searching for it. This is why your hair expands in humidity - it is reaching out for the moisture in the air.

Frizzy hair is essentially empty hair. The bonds inside the hair shaft are disconnected. You need to connect those bonds with a combination of protein and moisture. Adding moisture and protein to your hair will help fill in the holes inside your hair shaft, making your hair less fly-away and frizzy.

Condition is the key to eliminating frizz.

If your hair has all the nutrients it needs it will take on its own natural bounce and shine. You'll see more control in your curl and the frizz will be minimized.

With that said, not all conditioners are equal.

Start by getting a good deep treatment. It's the best thing to help with frizz. The deep treatment works on the inner structure of your hair, filling in the "holes" in the molecular layer of the hair shaft. Once those holes are filled in, your hair should "in theory" lie down and not fly away as much.

For dry and frizzy hair you need to use a deep treatment at least once every two weeks.

Deep treatments work from the inside out so be patient; allow a good month of weekly deep treatments to see a consistent change in your hair.

I like the Ouidad deep treatment.

However, there are many product lines especially for curly hair like MopTop, Deva Curl and Curlisto. They too may have a great deep treatment to try.

Be aware that if your hair texture is wiry it can appear frizzier. The frizz could be just the texture of your hair. A deep treatment will help your hair's condition but it won't change its texture.

Along with the deep treatment, use a leave-in conditioner on your hair every time you wash it. This will help detangle and condition your curls.

Follow up with a good water soluble styling gel. I recommend MopTop(moptophair.com) or Deva Curl. Deva Curl is created by Lorraine Massey. If you liked her book Curly Girl, you might like her product as well.

Avoid hot oil treatments. These only coat the outer layer of hair and do nothing to condition your hair. Hot oil treatments actually do more harm than good.

The following specific tips should also help you win your battles with the frizz monster.

Rule number 1: Never brush curly hair when it is dry! Brushing dry curly hair disrupts the curl pattern, making it frizz and get big and poufy. Brush curly hair only when it is wet, using a wide tooth comb or vent brush to get the tangles out.

Try not to wash your hair with shampoo every day - only rinse and condition. This will help your hair retain moisture, because shampoos take moisture out. Maybe use shampoo twice a week (unless you have an oily scalp - then whenever you feel it needs it).

At night pull your hair into a loose low pony tail using a "scrunchy" (covered rubber-band) or take congested sections and twist each section on to the top of your head, so you are sleeping on the underneath side of your curl. Then in the morning take down the twists. Pulling the curls up or back helps contain the curls so you are not tossing them around all night.

A suggestion for really windy days would be to wear your hair pulled up. The wind really tosses and tangles the curl; I don't think there is any amount of product that would withstand the wind! Check out my book Strictly Curls for some ways to wear your hair up!

Another option is to notice if your stylist uses thinning shears on your hair. If he/she does then this could be the frizz and poof you are noticing. To eliminate this effect allow the hair to grow out, and don't let anyone use thinning shears on your hair.
