It's hard to work out what shape a celebrity's face is at the best of times because they're so good at disguising it.

But have a look at the fourth picture in the top row (Elizabeth Shue), and immediately below it, the fourth picture in the middle row (Anne Heche). If you can arrange them side by side it's easier to see the similarities and differences.

Elizabeth Shue has a face that is almost but not quite an oval. The hair line tapers upwards from the ears and runs in a straight line across the top of her forehead. The width is too similar at the hairline and the cheeks. Her chin is slightly square, with a straight line at the centre.

Anne Heche's face is similar. But her chin is much narrower, rounder, and her jaw line tapers more sharply towards it. Look at the hair line from the ears up. It's almost identical to that of Elizabeth Shue.

Shue's main task, in terms of looking gorgeous and sexy, is to prevent her face from looking too much like a rectangle. The width of her face does not vary much from top to bottom, though with clever styling it can be coaxed into a much more attractively rounded, oval shape.

When she wears curly short hairstyles that leave her face exposed, she bulks her hair up slightly so that it moves outwards from her ears and curves round the top. This combination of width and height lengthens her face slightly and confuses the eye so that her chin, by comparison, seems smaller and narrower.

A different approach is to conceal or modify the width of her brow and cheek with strands of curly hair falling casually, or by artful design, across her face.

Shue's absolutely sexiest short curly hair cut is the first photo in the gallery.

Here she wears a short tousled style with highlights and low lights that bring out the texture of her curls. The shape of her forehead and the width of her cheek are masked by an off centre part and gorgeous, thoroughly disordered curls falling across one eye. On the other side the tapering hair line suggests the inward curve of an oval. The square, straight hair line is completely hidden.

To complete the transformation of Shue's face into the most delicious of oval illusions, she lowers her chin, pulling it in towards the neck. The effect is pure perspective. Her chin appears smaller, narrower and rounder because of the camera's viewing angle, and by dint of the fact that her chin is now further from the camera. Like anything that moves away from the observer, her chin appears smaller than it really is.

Compare this with the picture beside it, and it's almost as if you're looking at two different women. Yet both show Elizabeth Shue with short haircuts for curly hair.

Elizabeth Shue creates a new face shape illusion in the second picture in the second row. Short curly haircut picture number seven. The off centre part and the rounded sweep of Shue's hair create a perfect oval profile around the brow. And that big smile? It lengthens the line of her jaw and transforms it into the matching half of the oval that begins at the hair line.

Anne Heche, on the other hand, when using short haircuts for curly hair, needs to deal with a chin and jaw line that are almost too narrow. Her short curly hair cuts tend to come down at the back, towards the shoulders, where her hair peeps out on either side and adds to the apparent width of her lower face.

You'll see it there in picture six, picture eight and picture nine, all in the middle row. In picture six, of course, Anne Heche's face shape is also concealed by her hand, by the camera angle, by the sweep of hair down over her forehead, and by the concentration of light in her blonde curls that draws the eye continually upwards. The soft light on her face, by contrast, softens all her skin tones and blurs the line of her jaw.

Camera angle and lighting are important here, too. This time bright light blurs the skin tones and the precise line of her jaw on the lower right side. Diagonally opposite, high on the left side, shadows cleverly narrow the width of her brow. Just where the shadows end a delicate, highlighted arch of hair reaches down, tricking the eye into believing that her brow sweeps from there in oval smoothness down to her cheek.
