Prom curly hair updos are what you expect to see at the prom.
But curly hair updos are not all the same, and they're definitely not created equal.
Their success depends on the effect a girl is trying to achieve with her updo.
Several of the curly hair prom updos in the gallery below are simply cute, pretty, sweet hair styles that any girl would love to wear to the prom. Though perhaps not entirely innocent, they're not provocative either.
Prom Curly Hair Updos: Beguiling and (almost) Guileless
The picture at the start of the second row shows Dutch performer Fajah Lourens, whose hair and face seem to have been designed for prom curly hair updos.
Fajah's hair rises at a very steep angle so that most of it is above her head. A single curly strand adds interest beside her left cheek, and a few loose coils can be seen at the rear, hugging the back of her neck.
This curly updo is all about having a good time at the prom. Here's a girl looking pretty and up-market because - well, because girls like to look pretty and up-market. It could all change with a tilt of the head or a flutter of eyelashes, but this prom curly hair updo is more about fun than seduction.
So too is the updo in the middle of the bottom row. In this picture Inma Del Moral is just another girl having fun while looking as cute as she knows how to.
She doesn't mind being noticed, but there's nothing specific on her agenda.
In similar vein is the picture of Kate Beckinsale in the middle of the top row. She wears a style which, apart from the colors, is as traditional as prom curly hair updos can be. Kate's hair is piled high and reined in tightly, with not a loose strand or curl to be seen anywhere.
Very conservative, very safe. And perhaps a bit ... ordinary?
Like curly hair diva Keri Russell's choice of a less formal style of updo in the second photo of the second row. It wouldn't be out of place at the prom, but neither would it steal the show. Her usual extreme curls have become far, far less pronounced. Hopefully she hasn't done anything drastic like - ugh! - straightening!
Prom Curly Hair Updos: Competition, Status and Prestige
Scarlett Johansson goes to the opposite extreme in the central and only full length picture of our gallery. Her faultlessly arranged blonde hair is crowned with a tiara and matched with a shoulderless, plain black gown.
Johansson's self-conscious pose and regal gaze hardly invite familiarity, but they suit this most formal of prom curly hair updos. This is anything but the picture of a girl having fun with her friends. Here, instead, is a female asserting her dominance, her unassailable prestige, in the world of women.
It doesn't have to be like that. For flawless taste in traditional prom curly hair updos - and no added nastiness - it's hard to surpass the style in the top row's final picture. This is someone famous but her name escapes me. Is it Grace Kelly? I'm not sure.
Prom Curly Hair Updos: Loitering with Intent
But back to Fajah Lourens, who models no fewer than three of our prom curly hair updos. She boosts the genre to another level completely in the very first picture in our gallery.
Here the weight of her long hair is raised at the back, in true updo style, but she's left so many delicious strands dangling free that it's almost a half up half down style rather than a mere updo. Her long hair is like a lacy curtain of curls in the air behind her. The shapes are exotic, complex and captivating, and the pattern they create heightens the smooth, open contours of her face.
A single strand falls beside her left cheek.
The woman in this photo is already a far cry from the carefree girl in the picture below it, but this dangerously lovely Dutch woman raises the bar yet again in the third of her prom curly hair updos, seen last but one in the top row.
This style hints at the swept-over technique of high-glamor hair styles, but only one section of hair is drawn across the forehead to fall in rich curls beside her face. The rest is gathered at the back, but not so tightly that it can't escape in tantalising glimpses on her left.
This is the only one of Fajah's three prom curly hair updos where the hair intrudes upon her face at all. The look is consciously, glamorously provocative. There's nothing remotely innocent about it.
Prom curly hair updos like this one make the world a difficult place for men trying to focus on things other than beautiful women.
Prom Curly Hair Updos: Secret Beauty and its Rituals
By their very nature, prom curly hair updos have a natural affinity with the tastefully revealing gowns and dresses whose appearance marks the start of the party season.
It's this conspiracy of gowns and prom curly hair updos, this celebration of women's secret beauty, that forms one of the great delights of prom nights. Updos and dresses combine to highlight and show off, in the most exotic and eye-catching manner, parts of a girl's body which, though startlingly attractive, often suffer concealment in the normal run of daily life - her neck, her shoulders, her back.
You only have to glance at some of these pictures - the second photo in the top row, the second photo in the bottom row, and the images of Penelope Cruz and Valeria Mazza in the third row - to understand how proms and formals suddenly unleash and legitimize a sort of glamorous sensuality that's all their own.
You see that sensuality again in the picture of Catherine Zeta-Jones at the end of the second row. She lifts her hair with her hands and a thick strand escapes to fall across her face. Her mouth and one eye are revealed only as tantalizing glimpses. I don't know why this device so urgently and completely seizes male attention, but it does.
Monica Bellucci achieves almost the same style in the photo next to Zeta-Jones. Bellucci's is a real half-up half-down style that certainly wouldn't go astray at the prom - her masses of brunette curls lift up at the back and tumble down in a dark cascade. Coupled with her open face, bare shoulders and low neckline, it's a crowd-stopping look.
These two hair styles even though, Strictly speaking, neither of these hair dos is an updo at all. But I've included them among our prom curly hair updos because they capture the essence of glamor updos - style, skin and sensuality.
Prom Curly Hair Updos: The Bottom Line
Famke Janssen, last picture but one in the bottom row, looks out demurely from beneath a prom curly hair updo that's classy, stylish, elegant - and whose effect lies somewhere in that middle ground between the happy, fun style of Inma del Moral and the queenly aloofness of Johansson.
Famke's smile is a knowing one. Her eyes sparkle with gentle humor, and perhaps also with the knowledge that prom curly hair updos are all just part of the game of life.
