Make a picture of wavy hair in your mind and what do you see? Probably something very shiny, glossy.
But not uniformly so. The light shifts and changes all down the length of wavy hair as the waves dip into darkness and emerge again, burnished and gleaming.
Ask any group of people to picture wavy hair in their mind and they'll conjure up an incredible range of images, from Veronica Lake and Jessica Rabbit to Charlize Theron or the girl next door. The variability of wavy hair is such that it spans every bit of the distance between curly hair and straight hair.
Its unique situation as the middle ground between these two extremes means that women of all hair types, sooner or later, will want to try their luck with wavy hair.
There's no shortage of people willing to cut, style, distort, weaken and destroy your hair in the name of fashion and business, so be careful what lengths you go to to achieve a wavy hair style.
Even if you already have naturally wavy hair you'll you'll probably still experiment to see whether more wave or less is better, and you'll have products foisted on you "to enhance your hair's natural texture" and so on.
Trolley loads of products shouldn't have any place in the picture of wavy hair or any other hair type. Most hair products contain chemicals. Chemicals are bad for hair. These should be self-evident facts, but they get overlooked both in the pressure of everyday life and in the rush to have the latest hair style.
Read the labels, and try to steer clear of obviously harmful ingredients.
The shape of wavy hair depends on the length of its waves. Other factors play a role, like the hair's texture - whether it's fine or thick - and its general state of health. But wave length is a major determinant of the shape of wavy hair styles.
Some wavy hair, if cut in a short or even medium style, never develops the finished form of its wave. What you see then is an intermediate stage, not straight but neither is it the shape it would be if left to grow.
That isn't necessarily bad. The intermediate stages of naturally wavy hair can be just as attractive as longer styles. Sometimes the effect is even more dramatic, or cute, or sexy, or appealing.
And how you wear your wavy hair, of course, adds one more variable to an already crowded picture. Wear it loose or tied, up or down, formal or casual, long, short or medium - wavy hair changes to meet the occasion.
No single picture of wavy hair can illustrate the range of possibilities. You'll find a small part of the variety in the pictures below.
