My hair is just like yours and I too also used to always wear it up, never loose. Unless I use a lot of mousse designed for curly hair it looks awful - really frizzy and like candy floss.
But I do this and now I never wear it up :) Try some mousse!
Condition really well first. I don't use shampoo as it's too drying, then apply to towel dried hair and let your hair air dry. Apply more if your hair still looks a little puffy when dried.
I hope this helps xxx.

Answer to your cry for help...? by: Vayda
Hey! Take it from someone who deals with her own frizzy hair, a lot! Definitely don't straighten it! The more you straighten your hair, the drier it will get, and you said it is dry to begin with ... you could risk it breaking ... and then it gets REALLY bad!
Okay - so everyone's hair is different, but I would say that if you want your friends to stop bugging you, maybe you could try some product. I don't suggest gel (unless you water it down a bit), but I mean that might work ... maybe even go and ask a salon and see what they suggest. They are gonna wanna sell you the highest priced thing in there but at least then you know what TYPE of thing works and you can get a cheaper version to work on your hair.
So another thing I would try is maybe some sort of natural moisturizer ... ? Like I know to get your hair really shiny you use an egg mixture ... so maybe you could find something like that, where you could put it in and wash it out. If you give your curls some moisture and let them get hydrated they will become their natural pretty loops ... let your hair down on weekends and when you aren't around people. When you wear it all tight (straight or curly) it breaks your hair and makes it frizzy.
All in all just try different things ... look around. Practise on weekends when you don't have to be around your friends but you can see what will work. When you get your curls working you will see how liberating it will be because you can wear it in different ways and express yourself!
Good luck girl! Embrace your curls! I hope I helped a bit!!!
