Medium wavy hair styles create a feeling of softness round a woman's face, catching the light and curving it to follow its own lazy, sinuous movements.

Dark and medium coloured wavy hair takes on a burnished feel as the waves travel in and out of the light. Pale coloured waves form complex movements of light and shadow. Medium wavy styles create another range of effects.

But none of these effects can be had with straight hair styles, where light reflects uniformly in a single direction, or with curly hair that shatters the pattern of light completely.

Wavy hair is in a class of its own.

Wavy hair grows differently from one person to the next, and the length of its natural wave is similarly variable. As wavy hair grows it develops its own natural shape.

This variability makes for a wide range of medium wavy hair styles.

If you have wavy hair and a medium style, your hair may well have enough length to develop its natural wave completely. But prematurely shortened waves could also take you hair style in new, attractive directions.

If you have long wavy hair now, you should be able to judge the length of its natural wave. Hopefully your stylist can tell you what will happen to that wave when you have it cut at different hair lengths - short, medium, medium long - and what styles will suit you.

Medium wavy hair styles can cross the forehead in a dramatic sweep, or cover one eye in a Veronica Lake style which, though shorter, is just as glamorous and dramatic as the original. They can hug your neck and accent your cheeks, contrasting the texture of your skin and surrounding it with a beautiful play of light.

Medium wavy hair styles can be funky and fun, too. With less length there's less weight, letting your hair spring up into a shorter, choppier, bouncier wave than you'd have with longer hair pulling the shape down.

All this is assuming that you're considering medium wavy hair styles because you have naturally wavy hair.

But it seems to be built into the female mind that whatever hair they don't have is the hair they must have. Lots of women whose hair is straight will want to try medium wavy hair styles at some stage.

Not very long ago, curly and wavy hair styles of any length - short, medium and long - were outcasts in the world of women's fashion. Women with the outlawed hair type were desperate to straighten their hair by any means - and people lined up to sell them products, appliances and treatments.

Now it's the straight haired women who think they need curly or wavy hair, and the same sales force is ready with another raft of products, appliances and treatments for that.

Fashion trends drive sales. That's why we have fashion trends. A new trend demands new products, new accessories, new treatments. Consumers spend money and companies make profits.

It's good to remember, as the fashion world winds itself into another frenzy, that the height of yesterday's fashion is invariably today's laughing stock. There have been some lamentably silly hair styles created in the name of fashion.

Would you be caught dead wearing them?

It's also good to reflect that your hair pays a price for the products you apply to it and the treatments you put it through. It will forgive you for as long as it can but eventually, if you abuse it, your hair will reach overload.

Then you'll find yourself wondering why on earth you were never happy with healthy hair when you had it.

Don't let your quest for fashion, be it medium wavy hair styles or whatever they come up with tomorrow, wind up with you wearing ratty hair in the poorhouse - or no hair at all.
