The pictures on this page show a variety of medium curly hair styles.
You'll notice that very few of them have a centre parting - only two, in fact. Or maybe three. Why is that?
There are two main reasons. One is that curly hair shouldn't be forced into any sort of parting, ever. Combs are deadly for curls and should never be used on them. Instead of parting curly hair at an arbitrary point, you really need to let it divide where it naturally wants to.
That's the first reason for a lack of centre partings among these medium curly hair styles - women letting their curly hair fall where it will.
But it's not the main reason.
The main reason is that these women, or their stylists, wanted the dividing point of their hair to be off-centre. It was a deliberate choice.
Parting the hair off-centre lets you sweep it across one side of your forehead, trail it down one side of your face, partly cover up an eye or dangle a strand or two of hair randomly (but very carefully) over your features.
Why?
Well, partly to change the face shape, or to soften its edges. Partly because dangling strands of hair and half-concealed eyes are really sexy. Why are they sexy? Good question. Maybe they hint at the tousled look that's popular in lots of medium curly hair styles. Or they give you that flirty catch-me-if-you-can look.
Well if off-centre parts are so good, why would anyone divide their hair in the middle?
Because they can. Have a look at the first picture, the blonde woman with big, loose waves of hair. She has a classic, oval face. That's the ideal shape. Almost any style will suit her, including a simple, symmetrical look.
Of course, a centre part can be a device in its own right, to narrow a round face, for instance, by adding length evenly and concealing facial width.
You'll see various devices at work in the medium curly hair styles on this page.
Behind one woman's neck, some lovely corkscrew curls make the angle of her jaw line seem less sharp, and balance the volume of curls above her face.
A blonde girl has her hair extended to the jaw line and teamed with heavy ear rings, to add width to a very narrow chin and jaw.
Another woman has dark hair made high at the top and thick at the sides. This is an interesting picture (the last of the medium curly hair styles below) because the angle of this woman's head tilts the hair away on one side and gives her face a triangular look - wider at the jaw than at the forehead - which is usually avoided.
But she doesn't look bad at all.
And that's a reminder that the rules of beauty are not absolute. They're more like guidelines.
If you like the look of medium curly hair styles, experiment with your hair and look at it with an open mind. Ask your friends what they think.
Something that isn't supposed to work might be just perfect for you.
And medium curly hair styles might become your very own signature look.
