In a sense, medium curly hair cuts make a statement about the women who wear them, in much the same way that women's short hair styles reveal so much about their owners.
But it's a different kind of statement.
A woman with a short hair cut has made, and clearly made, a definite decision. To have short hair. To do away with many of the options she used to have. It's a definite move, in a definite direction - towards something. Short hair, open face, confident outlook.
When a woman has medium length hair, it seems less like a move towards something and more like a move away - away from long hair. It almost seems that she's turned her back on one of her most luxurious expressions of femininity.
That isn't necessarily true, of course.
Medium curly women might have dispensed with long hair, but there's more than enough length in medium curly hair to create softness, excitement, mystery, and the many different looks a woman needs to keep getting noticed each day.
Going medium length, or even short, doesn't mean abandoning feminine possibilities. Far from it. It just means using hair in different ways.
So what do medium curly hair cuts offer a woman?
You get some outstanding, beautiful styles with medium curly hair cuts. Like bobs, and flicks, and tousled manes that surround your face. Or fluffy layers, or tight masses of curls, or spirals tumbling past your cheek.
A medium curly hair style can be soft and feminine, very cute, and decidedly sexy.
But approachable. Friendly.
So soft, so sexy, so feminine and, indeed, so friendly, that the image of Valeria Golino (the second picture in our medium curly hair cuts gallery) pointing a gun at somebody is incongruous.
Surely women with medium curly hair cuts don't do that sort of thing. It's not part of their brief. They're not murderous.
But they are fluffy and cute, and therefore dangerous.
Very dangerous.
The fact is, medium curly hair styles are a trap. They look so innocent. But they're deadly.
And of course, medium curly hair cuts offer more styling options than short hair.
You can't toss half behind and trail the rest languidly down one shoulder as you can with long curly hair. But you can wear your medium curly hair up, or down, or tied back, or loose, or swept to one side across your forehead, or hugging one cheek.
Medium curly hair cuts, by their nature, tend to create volume around a woman's face. Where longer hair would begin pulling downwards by virtue of its own weight, the shorter length of a medium style means that gravity is not such a factor.
Medium length curly hair is free to fluff out and it does, particularly if the hair is tightly curled and fine in texture.
And that certainly generates a lot of movement and interest around your face.
Volume and fluffiness are more pronounced if your hair is cut in layers. The shorter sections of hair have less weight than longer sections below - and will naturally rise more, adding volume to the hair's profile.
But layering can be stood on its head, too.
Lorraine Massey of DevaChan Salon in New York has a technique of dividing curls into two sections and cutting the underneath one shorter than its twin on top. This gives extra strength to the lower curl, which then supports the upper one and encourages it to ride higher, pointing outwards.
In a practical sense, medium curly hair cuts require less drying time than long curly hair (we're talking here about drying curly hair naturally, not blow drying it. Blow dryers are bad for any hair, but they're cataclysmic for curly hair.)
Sometimes medium curly hair cuts are an experiment. A woman either doesn't want to go all the way to a short hair cut, or she's working her way up to one. Having medium length hair lets her put a toe in the water, testing and gradually getting used to the idea of shorter hair.
