Bridget Moynahan joins the ranks of medium celebrity hair styles with a loose, side-parted wavy hair cut, tucked behind one ear but covering the other. It's a cute and very sexy look.

To her left in the gallery is an unusually soft looking Mila Jovovich. This fluffy, permed hair is not her usual style. As a medium length formal hair style it does the job, but the colour does nothing for her face and the perm looks artificial - it's like waves of chocolate melted on her head, or someone else's wig that she grabbed at the last moment.

Two photos above Mila is curly haired British supermodel Karen Elson. She wears her usual challenging gaze and has her forehead and cheeks framed by tousled locks. Her scrubbed, deceptively bare face and harmonious skin and hair tones give her an artfully natural look.

It's an approach that stands in contrast with the way Asia Argento, below her and to the right, has been treated by the image makers.

Both have medium hair styles. But where Elson's look is an open faced challenge, Argento's is provocative. Her hair is black against her pale skin and a single dark curl glides relentlessly past one eye and down her cheek to kiss the rich red corner of her mouth. Argento's hair is important, but so is the downward tilt of her chin and the steamy gaze of her eyes looking up through her lashes.

Second in the middle row, X Files star Gillian Anderson goes for lots of volume and a thick, wavy look, the shape of her face subtly altered by the hand on which she rests one cheek.

Russian actress Amalia Goldansky is virtually unknown in the West, but she adds a beautiful image to the world's repertoire of medium celebrity hair styles with her picture on the top row.

She's the curly redhead in fourth spot, just before Naomi Watts.

The gallery contains two more of Amalia's medium curly hair styles, one on the second row and another on the third. She retains her very curly look in the middle picture, a candid street shot, but is more wavy in the last.

The two medium celebrity hair styles of Annie Potts are very curly and very cute. Her first is almost a short hair style that leaves her face bare, with a single curl straying onto her forehead. Her second cut is definitely mid length, more casual and tousled, and much thicker looking thanks to a deeper, richer colour and the attractive use of highlights that define the shape of her curls.

Naomi Watts is almost a synonym for medium celebrity hair styles, and her picture here shows a loose blonde, beautifully wavy style. Raised at the hair line and subtly highlighted to take full advantage of contrast and curl, her hair plays across her forehead and around the edges of her cheeks in a feminine show of light and movement. Like her Russian counterpart Amalia Goldansky, German actress Beate Finckh is little known in the English speaking film world. But she, too, adds at least one lovely picture to the roll call of medium celebrity hair styles.

In the first photo on the bottom row of the gallery, Beate's dark curly hair covers her forehead completely, touching her eyebrows, and tumbles past her cheeks without obscuring them. Hers is a look of beauty, to be sure, but also one of extraordinary sweetness.

Beside Beate Finckhe, Gloria Reuben models a hair cut which, though completely different from the others, easily qualifies as a member of this medium celebrity hair styles photo gallery.

Reuben wears an Afro style of curly hair in which gorgeous corkscrew shapes are visible all around the edges. It's a natural hair style that seems perfectly suited both to her face shape and to the tones and texture of her skin. Her eyes beautifully echo the darkness of her hair.

By comparison Cameron Diaz, in the top row, wears an extremely unnatural looking hair cut. From her cheeks down there's something artificial in the way it falls. But when you're photographed with your head in a bird cage, the symbolism demands that your plumage should look pretty stylized.

Cameron's hair is raised at the forehead in a way that recalls Naomi Watts and her loose waves in the top row. The effect here is completely different.

With no clear tonal difference between skin and hair, the image of this celebrity completely loses focus. It's flat, brassy, and strangely repelling.

Medium celebrity hair styles. Their impact can indeed be powerful - and very different, from one celebrity to the next, from picture to picture, from purpose to different purpose.
