I actually have curly hair and a fringe, but the only reason I have a fringe is because I recently started suffering from eyebrow hair loss which is mortifying! So, waiting for them to regrow I have had to have a fringe, which I straighten a lot so that it covers my eyebrows. So you can imagine that looks a bit weird as I have short curly hair! :(.
HOWEVER, maybe you could still have a fringe, and just straighten it SLIGHTLY so that it goes in the right place, then leave the ends to go wavy.
As for around the face, I just shape the curls, like 'feathering?' so that there are a few curls around as I normally have my hair up when I am out and that seems to look okay. Ask for a hairdresser who likes curly hairstyles, or even someone who likes dealing with afro-caribbean hair as they might have a few ideas!

I reckon you should get a perm, and leave the soft curls for the tongs and hairspray!
