I have hair that's kinky curly just like yours, only not as long. I don't use gel on my hair at all, it just makes it too stiff in my opinion.
It seems like you just want to weigh your hair down because you don't really know what to do with it. That's ok! I used to be the same way and would weigh it down with gel and pull I back. Don't do that! Do you know how many people would kill for our hair?
I've been using the herbal essence for curly hair product line. I let my hair air dry because heat brings frizz and dry hair. Don't don't don't towel dry it!! That will only bring more frizz, if you feel that you absolutely have to have it extra dry, this will sound dumb, but use something soft like a shirt. No joke! It's soft unlike the towel and it is soft on your hair.
After I do that, I use the herbal essence mousse, Totally Twisted. I've been using it forever and I love it. It smells great and you don't have to use very much of it. Just put it in and twist your curls a little and go.
Also, I never brush my hair. I put my conditioner in and run my hands through my curls while it's in there then I rinse. I think combing/brushing your curls after you're out of the shower kills the curls.
I hope this helps!!

I'm so glad you asked!
After your gel is dry, take a water based pomade; rub a little into the palms of your hands and take your hair like you would pull it into a pony tail, pressing down on your hair to break up the crunch (only use the palms of your hands, as fingertips will separate and frizz the hair).
Continue breaking up the crunch by taking your hair and twisting it down though the length of your hair.

Best of luck, and remember to always use a water based gel!

Dry and Soft by: mags
After shampooing leave your conditioner in, just the amount you'd normally use to condition your hair. Don't apply any other product after this. Towel dry hair, scrunching it lightly with the towel, and then blow dry upside down with a diffuser attachment. This should give you nice soft ringlets that won't just turn into a mushroom at a moment's notice. Not to mention blow drying the roots first while leaning over (upside down is what I called it earlier) will keep you from getting triangle hair that's straight at the roots and super curly at the bottom. No crunch, touchably soft, and an immense time/money saver.
