Your hair is damaged from straightening it. Hence why it dries frizzy and feels dry, rough.
The damage won't go away without cutting it off. In order to preserve some of your length start with a small trim. Then condition, condition, condition. Your hair is thirsty for moisture. To start your hair off on a good note, you should use a deep protein treatment first, and then follow that with a moisturizing conditioner. Use only a sulphate free shampoo or a low sulphate shampoo. You would also do well with a good spray leave in, and a curl balm.
Good luck!

Tried Many Products by: Anonymous
I've tried many "Curly Hair" labeled products. I've tried the gels, mousses, leave in conditioners, hair sprays. Some didn't work and some worked a little too well, leaving my hair looking scrunchy and hard.
I finally found TIGI Catwalk Curls Rock Curl Amplifier. Works great alone. Now I'm still always trying new products, but I always have that around for the days I don't want to experiment.
As far as shampoos and conditioners go, I switch them out every time I run out. I do not use the same one every time.

Stylist Comment by: Nicole
Amy Jo,
I feel your frustration.
It looks from your picture that your curl is more like a wave. I have similar curl, which is why I get my hair permed. I like to have more curl and not have to work so hard at getting it to look good.
To help encourage your curl you would want to work the gel into your hair in a raking motion. Then, scrunch it and diffuse it right away to set the gel.
Check out other Q&As on this web site. There you will get more information as to what kind of products I recommend and what to avoid.
Best wishes,
Nicole

Hey! I was in the same rut as you were in. They took my curl product (physique curl cream) off the market and I was lost.
I see your pic and that is how most curl products would make my hair look - no definition.
I just ran across this product they sell at Sally Beauty Supply called Beyond the Zone curl cream. It is more like a cream than the liquidy type stuff most labels call curl cream. It really adds definition without leaving your hair lifeless. Plus the best part, it's only like $5.00! It is THE ONLY product that I have found to make my curls look right.
1. Get out of shower, put a towel on your head for 3 min just to take the sopping wetness out of your hair.
2. Comb through hair once.
3. Put cream in hands and rub around then apply to hair evenly running fingers through your hair.
4. Do a couple of scrunches at the ends and flip head over once to apply to hair in the back.
5. Now don't touch it until it is 85% dry! (trust me)
6. Now you can add a smidge more of the cream, scrunching it into you hair at places that need a little more definition or de-frizzing.
7. Now if you like you can flip your head over and use a hairdryer with a diffuser for curly hair to GENTLY and on low, dry the roots of your hair for more body.
I usually put the diffuser towards the roots of my hair and barely/gently move it around in a circular motion.
I hope this works for you!

Burt's Bees by: Anonymous
My hair became easier to manage after using Burt's Bees hair products. It seemed that once I stopped using them my hair went back to being frizzy. You can visit the Burt's Bees website and find out what they have to say about their products being good for you.

Try Carol's Daughter products. Go and check it out. Ones that I love are the Mimosa and the Black Vanilla leave-in. I also love the Milk one! Try to go to HSN because sometimes you will find a good deal. Great products from Carol's Daughter:-)
