Tried finding hair styles for naturally curly hair? It's not easy, is it?
When you look through hair style magazines, it's surprising to see how few pictures there are of naturally curly hair styles. Even some of the pictures on this page don't really qualify as natural curly hair styles. But suitable pictures really are hard to find.
Why is it, I wonder, that even though curly hair is in fashion, and wavy hair with it, so few photos of naturally curly hair styles actually make it into magazines whose sole area of interest is hair and hair styles?
Surely more and more women must be interested in naturally curly hair styles? Curly hair varieties make up a big proportion of the population, after all, and there's a growing emphasis - I hope - on more natural methods of looking after and styling curly hair.
It's a mystery, but it starts to make sense when you think about it.
Most of the pictures in hair styles magazines come from salons. Naturally, they want to have their best work publicized, and the hair magazines are an obvious channel.
And the hair style magazines are keen to publish new photos, too. It's what they do.
If lots of pictures were available showing hair styles for naturally curly hair, I'm pretty sure the magazines would print them. The fact that they don't means they're not receiving any.
Pictures of naturally curly hair styles are rare because salons aren't offering them to be published. They're not even taking photos of naturally curly hair styles.
Why would that be?
For one thing, naturally curly hairstyles don't lend themselves to major intervention. There's not much for a stylist to do to them. Curly hair finds its own style if it's allowed to, and as long as it's healthy it looks great. A woman can manage day to day changes in her style - no need for a salon there.
So for hair salons, there's not much milage in curly hair. People who understand and value their naturally curly hair don't want it chopped and glued into some peculiar shape that suits someone else's need to feel creative - they just want it cut properly, in a style that suits their curls and their face.
And that brings us to the other reason for a lack of interest, among salon owners and stylists, in hair styles for naturally curly hair. They can't do them. They don't know what to do with curly hair at all. They don't know how to cut it. The care, management, needs and styling of naturally curly hair are a complete mystery to them.
Maybe this will change as curly hair's popularity continues to grow. Maybe.
But it's more likely that the industry will continue to focus on high cost, frequently changing hair fashions and the sale of products, because that's where the money is.
That means we'll continue to find virtually no pictures of hair styles for naturally curly hair in the printed magazines. It's a pity, because curly hair, truly natural, happily curly hair, looks just wonderful. It was made to be photographed.
It's not like there's insufficient variety, either. When you think of naturally curly hair in bob styles, which look cute, and short hair styles, long styles, medium styles, updos, loose hair, braided hair, tied hair and the works, there's a lot of scope to capture on film the beauty of hair styles for naturally curly hair.
We'll keep looking anyway. Curly Hair Styles Magazine will continue the search.
They're out there somewhere. Hair styles for naturally curly hair. We'll find them.
