Any woman who has ever struggled with her hair will recognise the passion in these hair cut stories.
The first, a wonderful tale of a life reluctantly shared with curly hair, was written by Murphy Horner and first appeared in her WonderBlog on March 10, 2003.
The second of our stories is by Leah McLaren. Published in the Globe and Mail on November 6, 2004, it documents the journey of a woman with straight hair who always wanted the curly hair styles that seemed beyond her reach. And there was one curly hair style in particular that she always wanted!
Are these hair cut stories alone? Surely not! There must be millions of hair cut stories out there.
Tales of hair disasters and triumphs, tribulations, despair, experiments gone wrong, evolution, recriminations, exultation. Stories that confront the bitter-sweet, love-you hate-you relationship that exists between a woman and her hair.
Where does this intensity come from?
It starts very young.
The Danville Advocate Messenger reports an example:
Marissa, a 4-year-old preschooler, raises her hand. "Mrs. Robinson. Could you fix my hair?" she asks, already embarking on a female obsession that will last another 70 to 80 years or so.
The image a woman presents to the world is of immense importance to her. Her hair and her face are partners in creating (what she hopes is) the focal point of her image.
And while she can't structurally change her face ... hmm ... Let me rephrase that - while a woman usually will elect not to change her face structurally, she can, and feels compelled to, and does, frequently, change her hair.
With results that can surprise, delight or appall her.
And there are days when a woman's hair goes AWOL and does whatever it feels like, leaving the rest of her image to fend for itself.
Bad hair days.
Incidentally, a bit of knowledge can help you avoid bad hair days, and save money as well. You can read about it here.
Now where were we? Ah yes, women and their hair!
The torment is multiplied when, by her very nature, a woman desires precisely the type of hair she doesn't have. The quest for it leads her on long and difficult journeys, fraught with terrifying images in the mirror.
Did any girls ever reach womanhood without having spilled tears of rage and frustration over their hair?
Of course!
But neither of them had any interesting hair cut stories to tell!
