A hair cut for curly hair is something you can expect to see pictured in hair style magazines these days. Curls are back. They're in fashion. They're a must have.

So asking for a hair cut that emphasises and glorifies your curliness won't get you the strange looks, excuses and protests it would have done in the recent past.

But it won't necessarily get you a great hair cut either.

Stylists who understand curly hair are still scarce, and will be for quite a while.

Generations of stylists have never seen a fashion world that takes curls seriously. A hair cut for curly hair hasn't been in the repertoire of most stylists, because for their whole career curly hair has been a nuisance, an ugly duckling, a shape and texture to be gotten rid of.

Their training didn't include curly hair - except as something to be straightened.

These thousands of hair stylists can't do an about-face and become curly hair specialists overnight.

It's like when governments pass laws to make something compulsory - seat belts for instance - but the real world takes a few years to catch up because attitudes have to be changed, people have to be trained, new habits have to be learned and new skills taught.

For some time yet, finding a stylist capable of a good hair cut for curly hair will be a challenge.

Sure, you'll find lots of stylists saying they do curly hair now - it's suddenly become a big, lucrative market, curly hair cuts, and everyone wants a piece of the action - but how can you distinguish a fake from a genuine curlophile who'll produce a beautiful hair cut for curly hair?

And you owe it to yourself to make that distinction.

After all, you don't want your newly-welcome curls, waves, corkscrews and ringlets hacked by some yeah-whatever type who last week would have slapped a flat-iron on you while you were still trying to explain what you wanted.

Do you?

You want your hair cut for curly hair to be done by someone who knows how to handle your curls properly.

Someone with ideas, with a great feel for hair design and styling, who at the same time appreciates, understands and cares about curly hair and how it should be cut to enhance your features.

Do hair artists like this exist?

Yes they do.

But how do you find one?

It's not simply a question of price. An expensive salon in itself is no guarantee of an understanding, sympathetic stylist, let alone a curly hair specialist.

Nor can you assume that a stylist is inferior just because they charge less. Not everyone is motivated by greed. Some people really love what they do.

That's the sort of stylist you want to find.

One of the best ways is through recommendations. Of course, if you see a stylist who has the most gorgeous curly hair herself - or himself - the chances are very good that they understand and love curls and will do their best to help you.

But still get a recommendation if you can.

Ask your friends. Ask people you don't know. Ask perfect strangers!

You can, you know.

Women in boutiques, coffee shops, department stores, for instance, often pay attention to their hair and wouldn't mind you asking where they get it cut. It's a compliment, and women love being complimented on their hair. It means their most important accessory is working for them.

And isn't that what you want. too?

Talk to people. You'll find that most women adore hair talk and will want to help you.

It's worth the effort. It's worth taking your time to find the right stylist. Then you can go to the salon with confidence, knowing that when you ask for a beautiful, flattering, cute, sexy or sophisticated hair cut for curly hair, you'll get exactly what you asked for.
