I have curls and have always had layers. It adds shape. Texturizing is the way to go also. It gives a better look.

Jas,
Do layers make your hair thicker? Layers create weight in different places around your head. Not necessarily "thicker". Thickness comes from the scalp; but layers do add more movement.

Jas,
I understand... sometimes people are blessed with too much goodness! Lucky you, your hair is just curly and big, not frizzy too!
Yes, there is a way to cut into the curl to minimize the density and make it lie down and not out. Unfortunately, there are not many stylist who cut this way. Myself, Cristo with the Curlisto product line, Ouidad, and other curly stylist have their own cutting technique that works with your hair while taking out the bulk.
Definitely no thinning shears, no twisting and knotting (together), no razors to thin the hair. All of these techniques do remove hair but they explode the curl, making the curl pattern a frizzy, shapeless mess.
I would suggest looking online for a stylist who comes highly recommended in your area. She/he may have their own technique that removes the bulk without exploding the curl. Be patient in finding a stylist, wear your hair up for a while if you can't stand wearing it down. It only takes seconds to cut your hair but it will take months to grow it out!! Do your research.
Check out naturallycurly.com or check out the names above for a stylist in your area. Check out strictlycurls.com for ideas on how to wear your hair up until you find someone to cut it.
Best of Luck, Nicole

No Thinning Shears! by: Anonymous
Jassy, whatever you do, don't try thinning shears. That's one of Nicole's big No-Nos for curly hair.
