Curly wedding hair styles, like curly hair generally, extend over a range of textures from extremely curly to vaguely wavy.
The two ends of that continuum are represented in this gallery of curly bridal hair styles.
Just to add spice, our two extreme photos also represent tonal opposites - very dark brunette, and very blonde.
The wedding hair style in the gallery's central picture is a dark, medium length, extremely curly bridal do. Drawn back from the forehead to the line of an art deco tiara, the hair is then allowed to swell in volume to form an oval round the bride's face.
It's not the most successful of curly wedding hair styles styles, because this model's face is long and the arrangement does nothing to offset that fact.
But the hair is gorgeous, and the patterns it forms round the edges are captivating, in the best tradition of naturally curly hair.
The blonde bride in the picture below features another mid length hair style, but it's far less formal and far less curly. Her wavy blonde hair falls naturally and flicks out alongside the lower half of her face.
The green and white flowers worked into her hair on either side are perfect for the color of her hair and its loose, almost tousled style.
This is a happy, sparkling, summery bride, and she has one of the most appealing curly wedding hair styles you could wish for.
To her left is another brunette, her long curly hair falling loose for its entire length, highlighted with a number of small pink flowers. There's no veil, no other decoration, and no need for either.
This simplest of curly wedding hair styles achieves the highest peaks of beauty and glamour. And all it has to do is act naturally.
There's a lot more interference in the top row's middle picture. It's another long, down style for naturally curly hair, but it's more trained than loose, creating a virtual wall of brown curls behind the bride's face, neck and shoulders.
But despite all that interference, it works.
As it falls, the hair widens to touch the outer reaches of the shoulders, building exotic patterns in the air and backgrounding beautifully the bride's shapely face and shoulders.
For all its art, this style too captures an air of glamorous simplicity, and creates a wedding picture that's hard to look away from.
The last picture in the gallery, number five in the bottom row, shows the medium length curly hair of the central photo reworked into a style that better suits this bride. Her hair is drawn in tightly at the top, and begins to widen from a point behind and above the ears.
The effect is to make the lower half of her face seem wider, while her exposed ears create a sense of greater width at the midline. The simple white decoration contrasts and highlights this curly wedding hair without competing. It's far more elegant than the tiara.
The goal of any hair style is to enhance the beauty of a woman's face, and curly wedding hair styles are no different.
Updos and tiaras don't automatically bestow glamour. Curly wedding hair styles are like every other type of haircut - you have to keep in mind the structure of the bride's face, and work with that structure in selecting a hair style.
Use elements that enhance the bride's facial structure. Forget anything that doesn't. However gorgeous an accessory may look in a catalog or a shop window, it's useless, and worse than useless, if it doesn't enhance the bride's beauty.
Simplicity can be the best road to elegance.
And simplicity is versatile, in curly wedding hair styles as in everything else.
Take the bride whose picture comes second in the second row. Why is she so happy? Because she won't have to spend half her wedding night taking clips, bands, accessories and sparkles out of her hair.
And she didn't have to get a loan to pay for the wedding day haircut.
Her wavy hair is all natural, and it's as flexible as it is simple.
This bride appears also in the second and fifth pictures in the top row, and the fourth picture in the bottom row. Each photo shows the same hair style perfectly suited to a different gown, different accessories, different jewellery.
Even with all the traditional trappings of bridal tiara, veil, gloves and jewelry, a simple hair style can hold its own. The long, curly, wavy wedding hair style in the gallery's first picture is very comfortable in its formal setting.
As long as there are weddings there will be formal traditions, like curly wedding updos. There are three curly updos in this gallery - picture four in the top row, picture four in the middle row, and picture one in the bottom row.
But updos don't tell the whole story of curly wedding hair styles. There's a lot more to it than that.
