When I was younger, I hated my hair.
My mom used to brush it for what seemed like hours to get the 'tangles' out. My hair was always frizy and poofy and big! And no matter how much I brushed it, it would get tangled a few minutes later.
By high school I was so frustrated that I put it in a ponytail every single day. As a Senior, I eventually cut it all off into a pixie-cut that was unflattering, but easy to deal with.
As hard as it may be to believe, it wasn't until I was in COLLEGE that I realized I had curly hair! My pixie cut was growing out and as a broke college student I couldn't afford to keep it short.
One day in the dorm bathrooms, my roommate asked if she could put some gel in my hair and scrunch it. It was still short, not even past my ears yet, and it seemed silly to me but I let her. A few minutes later with a little gel and finger curling, I felt like I was seeing my hair as it was meant to be for the first time!
My mom had been coming out tangles--my curls!--my entire life!
Now instead of brushing my hair I condition it and let it dry naturally, and I have curls that no one from high school believes are natural! I love my curls and wouldn't trade them for the world! I finally feel less like a hair-outcast!
