Now that curls are back, can you handle one of these curly hair medium styles that are long on glamour and short on maintenance?

In a way they're hard to define. It's a problem of medium length hair styles generally, of course - are they short styles that got a bit longer, or long styles that got a bit shorter?

With some hair types it's fair to say it's medium length if the hair reaches to the shoulders but not past them. But with curly hair it's less straightforward, because the length of curly hair changes with its mood. And even when its length increases, curly hair continues to deceive.

According to Sacramento California hair stylist John Kalfakis, "Curly hair doesn't necessarily get longer, it gets bigger... When curly hair gets longer it needs enough weight to hold it down. Cut it too short and you end up with a big ball of curl."

However you define them, medium curly hairstyles have offered plenty of glamour and won plenty of acclaim over the years, from Marilyn Monroe's white blonde pin curls to the waves of Kelly McGillis and Amanda Peet, to the tightly massed curls of Keri Russell.

And with curly hair coming back into fashion, you're going to see a lot more of these long short curly styles ... or short long curly styles.
