You expect to see some women with a curly hair cut.
Minnie Driver, for instance. She has the loveliest natural curly hair, and the occasions on which she disguises that fact have been, thankfully, few in number.
Or Katie Melua. She's naturally curly as well, and equally proud of the fact judging by the prominence of her long, loose botticelli curls in just about all of her hair styles.
Or Monica Bellucci. She shares that botticelli influence with Katie Melua, but mixes up her styles a lot more. And at times she's even gone (eek!) straight! With her hair, I mean. And I can't understand why she'd do that with all those dark, luxurious, glossy curls at her disposal.
Or Faith Hill. Can't miss that tousled blonde curly hair in the second line of our gallery.
And then there are women who surprise you one day and turn up with a curly hairstyle, when up until then their hair has never betrayed the hint of a ripple, let alone a kink, a wave or a corkscrew.
Like Avril Lavigne.
Here she is, suddenly, with a curly hair cut.
Happily it isn't short. She's kept her hair long. But you can't miss the dark waves rushing down the length of her locks, or the delicate, highlighted spirals standing out beside her face.
She looks quite different, and something in the picture doesn't quite work. It's not the curly hair. Not by itself. Maybe it's the shape of her hair as it moves outwards, wider and wider, and the way it leaves her cheek exposed.
She's much better served by hair cuts and hair styles that lengthen her face.
This isn't Avril's only curly hair picture. There's another one here, taken on stage as she stands at the microphone, facing the camera. And the effect of this curly haircut is much more flattering.
The highlighted curls are still there, but the waves are barely visible this time. Just a hint of darkness at the neck and shoulders.
She's swept her hair behind now, loosely so that its shape is full and soft and rounded to her ears, almost like a short hair cut complete with volume. It's further softened by ragged strands, left loose at the back so they show below the ears.
This hair cut narrows and lengthens her face with the spiral highlights at the front, and the line of her neck continues the line of those curls.
This is a much better look for Avril. Here she's really pretty.
Of course you shouldn't discount the lighting. It plays a role in both photos - harsh and white in the first picture, warm and soft in the second.
But in each picture the curly hair cut is crucial to the way she looks. The hair cut makes the difference.
Fiona Apple's another singer who looks good with a curly hair cut, but like Monica bellucci she likes to experiment. In one picture her hair is lit from the front and looks very curly indeed, hanging down against a wall of darkness. But another photo makes her look more wavy. Still curly, but with bigger, looser waves in a rich, chestnut color.
Estella Warren's a bit like Avril. Her looks improve with hair cuts that narrow the shape of her face, and she likes curly hair styles.
We don't have a big picture of her but it's a good one. Even at a distance, in an image where nearly everything is dark, her long, blonde curly hair cut catches the light and pulls your eyes in towards her face.
Ashley Judd must have tried just about every type of hair there is, every color, every cut, every style she can find. And most of them like her. Here she wears a dark curly hair cut and a winning smile.
In spite of the harsh, uneven flash it's the smile you notice. That, and the hair cut. Well, the patterns of light and shadow in Ashley's curly hair, anyway. How could you not be warmed by such a look?
It just goes to show, even in dreadful light, you can't keep a good curly hair cut down.
