Curly girl hair, first and foremost, is naturally curly hair.
It's curly hair looking the way nature intended, whether it manifests as ringlets or spirals, corkscrews or waves, or a tousled, bed head look you couldn't buy for love or money.
The joy of being a curly girl - the delight of real, natural curly hair - is that you don't have to blow dry it, shampoo it, brush it, comb it or train it endlessly. Because natural curly hair naturally knows what to do.
It lives, it breathes, it moves with you.
With natural curly girl hair you already have the ringlets and spirals, the twirls and curls, the bounce and movement and volume that other women would kill for.
But that's not necessary. Curly girl hair can be faked.
Sort of.
And so it will be, as long as women keep wanting the exact sort of hair they don't have.
But there's faking it, and there's ruin-your-hair faking it.
Which one sounds like the better option to you?
Curly Girl Hair or Not, Your Natural Hair Style Will Always Be Your Best Look
Whatever your natural hair texture may be, curly, straight, wavy - remember that it's yours. That's what you were issued, and that's what's always going to give you your best look.
So love your own brilliant, natural hair.
It's not just your skin that betrays your age. Hair makes its own eloquent comment on the passage of time. The less you treat it with chemicals, heat and appliances, the healthier your hair will stay ... and the younger you'll look.
If you abuse your hair it will respond like sun-damaged skin, by adding years to your appearance.
If your hair is straight and you want to try curly hair styles, think long term. Think about the health of your hair. Think about yourself years down the track, and how you want to look then.
Don't rush out for a shock and awe campaign of heat and chemicals at the salon. That approach will give you trendy, curly girl hair for a while - maybe - but it will also shorten your hair's life.
That's ruin-your-hair faking it. But there is another way.
Going From Straight Hair to Curly Girl Hair
In the middle of the top row of pictures is Mila Jovovich, posing as a very curly blonde girl with an immense cherry on her head.
Any girl would be happy with hair like that. Curly girl or not, you'd think twice before knocking back such an attractive and sexy curly hair style.
But it's not genuine curly girl hair.
To acquire that fake but fetching curly hair style, Mila Jovovich did not subject her own hair to the abuse and indignity of hot rollers, curling wands, crimping irons, chemicals, peroxide, or any other weapon of mass hair destruction.
She just put on a wig.
And you can do the same thing.
If you want to fake curly girl hair, go all the way and REALLY fake it. Like Mila Jovovich with the cherry on top. Like all those celebrities whose hair styles change with every appearance.
Wear a curly fashion wig. Try some cool curly hair extensions.
And if you're already a curly girl, there's nothing to stop you wearing curly girl hair extensions and wigs, either.
You can get long curly hair styles in an instant, and change back again just as quickly.
Keep them guessing. Keep them gawking.
But keep your own hair safe, and gorgeous, and ready to shine. Don't attack it. Don't assault it with products and tools. Do anything but ruin your own natural hair.
You only get issued one lot, and once it's gone ... well, you'll have to wear a wig, won't you?
