If oils ain't oils, as the ad used to say, then curly formal updos ain't formal curly updos.

This is a gallery of formal updos for curly hair, but no hair style in the gallery resembles any other.

And they're all beautiful.

Every curly one of these updos would grace a prom, bring life to a black tie do, light up a formal dance or bring home the joy of a homecoming celebration.

And on the red carpet these formal curly updos would have the flash bulbs popping and the paparazzi pushing.

But unique as they may be, these curly updos for any and everything formal, it's still possible to group them in loose categories that highlight the similarities.

Traditional Curly Formal Updos

Two curly updos with a traditional flavour can be found in pictures at the end of the top row and the start of the second.

The first weaves blonde, naturally curly hair into a raised crown of formal curls at the back of the head, leaving a curly fringe that reaches the eyes.

The second traditional updo pins back equally curly hair, tying it behind in a gathering of curls whose softness is heightened by smooth hair and a zig zag parting at the front.

Curly Formal Updos for Natural Curly Hair

The fourth style in the top row is a study in contrasts, a formal updo that conceals all trace of curl before allowing the hair's natural texture to emerge triumphantly in a curly top.

The second picture in the middle row does something similar, using braids this time to create two distinctly different areas of texture. In this formal updo, natural curls emerge high at the back from a band of braided hair.

The next picture along, third in the middle row, is a curly formal updo that lifts natural hair into a halo of light-filled curls above a darker base.

It's a young and incredibly cute style, a curly updo that satisfies formal requirements without making the poor girl look some old dowager whose face, inexplicably, has remained youthful.

Much more contained and controlled is the natural curly updo in the second photo, top row.

At a glance it isn't curly at all, just long, brunette hair smoothed like silk and rolled into a chignon.

But the true nature of this woman's hair is revealed in the beautiful, natural curls that swirl round the base of her neck.

Like other curly formal updos in the gallery, this one glories in its contrasts.

Curly Formal Updos for Extremely Curly Hair

Two blonde girls wear formal updos at the start of the top and bottom rows. Both styles use contrasting colors to bring out the glorious texture of natural curly hair.

The middle picture of the bottom row shows a fun style curly updo. Wild, exuberant, joyfully unrestrained and asymmetrical, it nevertheless remains a curly formal updo that any host would welcome with open arms - or at least, with polite delight.

Back in the top row, the middle hairstyle also has extreme curls and exuberance in equal shares, adding textural contrast to the mix. It's another cute and curly updo that would gladden hearts on any formal occasion.

Well, there's really only one of these in the gallery, and it's worn by the lovely girl at the end of the middle row. Different colors gorgeously highlight the contrast of curly and wavy textures in her hair.

Curly Formal Updos for Any Hair Type

This notion, too, has but one picture in the gallery to illustrate it.

The girl in the fourth picture of the middle row might be naturally wavy or naturally straight, but a curly formal updo like this can be styled from either texture.

This girl's style may not be traditional, but tradition often dictates a curly touch to formal updos.
