Of all the celebrity short hair cuts in this gallery, the most puzzling is the first.
It's Alyssa Milano, but it doesn't look like Alyssa Milano.
Not a bit.
She's wearing a short curly hair cut.
Is that what makes her look so different? Can one short hair cut make a woman look like someone else?
Or maybe it's not Alyssa Milano in this picture at all.
By contrast, Milla Jovovich in her tousled, short hair cut, right in the middle of the gallery, is immediately recognisable. There's no mistaking her.
Nor is there any doubt about the other celebrity women in this gallery full of celebrity short hair cuts.
And not only celebrity short hair cuts, but celebrity VERY short hair cuts.
Like the picture of Cate Blanchett in the middle row. She has very blonde, very wavy, very short hair.
It doesn't seem to matter what Cate Blanchett wears, whether it's short hair cuts or elf ears - she somehow takes over the accessories, the hair style, the costume, and transforms them into a look that is essentially her.
In the top row of the gallery two pictures of celebrity short hair cuts present a delightful, side by side contrast.
Shakara Ledard, in the second picture, wears a short afro style of beautiful, tightly coiled locks. It's a neat, symmetrical, carefully arranged hair style that balances the proportions of her face.
The last curls disappear behind her neck level with her jaw, leaving her prettily rounded chin to speak for itself.
Beside Ledard is the equally attractive but very differently styled Saffron Burrows, whose hair cut is short to medium, asymmetrical, curly, utterly tousled, and very sexy.
This is a very cute hair cut indeed. A cute, sexy, short curly hair cut.
Amid the carefully disordered curly hair, Saffron Burrows' face assumes very pleasing proportions indeed, and her dark eyes regard the camera with a warm, confident look.
A more intense gaze can be found among the celebrity short hair cuts in the bottom row, where model Maggie Rizer frowns out from the central picture.
Rizer's short, curly hair is lifted at the forehead with just a band of frizz falling forward. Swept up to create a tall, rounded profile, her curls catch the light, build shadows, and continue the sweep of contrast against the black background.
This is one of those celebrity short hair cuts created for a specific photo shoot. But unlike others of its kind, you could wear this short hair cut anywhere - as long as your face is proportioned like Maggie Rizer's.
Actress Rebecca Gayheart and model Kate Moss each wear two celebrity short hair cuts in this photo gallery.
The Rebecca Gayheart pictures both show her face at an angle. One hair cut sweeps her short, naturally curly hair up and back, with a couple of clips holding sections in place. Gayheart's chin tips downwards to show more of the top and back of her head.
It's meant to balance the shape of her chin with the profile of her hair ... but in the process it makes her forehead appear too wide.
Rebecca Gayheart's other picture, at the start of the second row, shows her short hair slicked straight backwards and gathered behind the neck. The camera's three-quarter view creates an oval contour on the left side of her face, all the way round from her forehead to her chin.
Camera angle is crucial to the successful presentation of some celebrity short hair cuts, and this one is no exception.
In the fourth picture, top row, the darkness of the background makes it difficult to distinguish the limits of Kate Moss's hair.
This celebrity short hair cut might actually be an updo. But if it is, it's a short curly updo, and still serves to illustrate the use of a short hair style.
Notice that the hairline suddenly becomes lighter on the left side of her forehead? It's almost a gap.
Now have a look at the picture immediately below - same model, different hair color - and more tricks played in the same part of the forehead.
It's almost as if there are two hair lines in this second Kate Moss hair cut. The true hair line tapers up from in front of the ear towards the middle of the forehead. It stops abruptly and a second hair line runs horizontally above it, continuing into the same area that shows as a gap in the other picture.
Left alone, Kate's hair line would give her face a diamond shape. With alteration, camera angle and careful toning, the hair line becomes ambiguous enough for the viewer's eyes to seek, and find, a more pleasing symmetry.
A similar trick is played in the picture of Helena Christensen, at the start of the final row. Her short hair cut, pulled back and pushed up, masks the angle of a hair line that would naturally form a diamond shape.
The height of this style boosts the height of her forehead, and its narrow peak echoes and balances her pointy chin.
Actresses Beate Finckh and Jennifer Jason Leigh appear in pictures at the ends of the first and second rows. Both celebrities wear short wavy cuts, but they haven't cut their hair super short - they can still use it to alter and disguise the look of their foreheads.
Moira Kelly takes a different approach to celebrity short hair styles, in this gallery at least. You'll find other pictures of her celebrity short hair cuts in this photo gallery.
Moira Kelly is the girl in blue on the bottom row.
Her face shape is similar to that of Kate Moss, but this young celebrity allows her short hair to follow its natural line. Its tapering direction is still evident on her left side, but lighting and camera angle virtually neutralize its effect.
The last of this gallery's celebrity short hair cuts is actually almost mid length, a brunette curly hair style worn by Famke Janssen. With its curls falling over one eye it's a flirtatious style. In spite of its color, this hair cut strongly recalls images of Marilyn Monroe.
So celebrity short hair cuts can be glamorous. They can be sexy, too, and cute, and anything else that a good hair style represents.
