There's no doubting the glamour of celebrity hair style updos.
A woman's bare neck and shoulders can be very fetching, coupled with raised hair and strands hanging around the face.
But formal updos have one very big limitation.
You can't wear them just any old time.
A real, pull-no-punches updo has to be teamed with an evening gown, heels, a decorative little purse, throngs of similarly updone women and crowds of suited, smiling men.
You have to wait for your moment.
But in terms of eye magnetism and sex appeal, hair raised casually in a spontaneous style can often leave these celebrity updos for dead.
Casual updos and messy buns offer the same combination of bare shoulders and neck, raised hair and loose tendrils wafting past the cheeks. But the exotic, hands-off dress style and the whole glittering, celebrity-driven event are missing, and in their place is a real person. She seems more approachable, and more like something in the real world.
Elizabeth Shue's Celebrity Hair Style Updos
Two shots from Elizabeth Shue's films illustrate this more relaxed style of updo - the middle pictures in rows one and two of the photo gallery below.
In one the celebrity's hair style is an updo that's part ponytail, definitely raised but also long enough to be visible behind her shoulder. The essential element is the pair of strands that fall from her forehead in true curly hair style, past her eyes, down her cheeks and continuing below her chin.
Of course, this hair style is not truly spontaneous - check the combined highlights and low lights that define so clearly the curly texture of her hair, and the work a Hollywood make up artist on her face.
Well, this is a promotional image from a movie poster, after all.
But it's not a glittering occasion and the evening dress is missing.
Compare it with the photos on either side, and the second picture in the bottom row. The same celebrity with her hair style in updos still looks glamorous, but her formal trappings distance her from the real world.
These pictures, from a world of celebrity hair style and updos designed to be photographed, are less about sex appeal than about prestige and status in the world of women.
For a change of mood, don't miss the second last picture in this updo gallery. Elizabeth Shue again - very informal, very cute, very sexy.
Bernadette Peters' Celebrity Hair Style Updos
Bernadette Peters is known for her naturally curly celebrity hair style and her updos are equally stunning.
Worn long, her hair cascades to her shoulders in a river of tightly clustered corkscrew curls. When arranged in an updo, it takes on completely new forms. Now it's a web of delicate tendrils that frames her cheeks, while the mass of her curls becomes a new and impressive adornment behind her head. This updo raises her profile, in a very literal sense.
If you look at our page on Best Celebrity Hair Styles, you can compare the long, down hair styles Bernadette Peters often wears with her three updos pictured in the gallery below.
Anne Heche's Celebrity Hair Style Updos
Two photos of actress Anne Heche show why she's able to wear short hair styles as successfully as she does. Her updo in this gallery leaves her face completely exposed. Its virtually oval shape is assisted by three or four trailing curls on one side and a rounded profile of hair reaching just below the top of her ears.
You'll find pictures of Anne Heche and some of her short hair styles at Short Haircuts for Curly Hair.
Moira Kelly and Minnie Driver Celebrity Hair Style Updos
It's interesting to compare the celebrity hair style updos of Moira Kelly and Minnie Driver.
Moira Kelly is the first picture in the gallery. Minnie Driver has three pictures in the bottom row.
The profile of both celebrities' updo styles is similar, but Minnie Driver uses curls as a fringe or bangs to alter the line of her forehead.
Moira Kelly leaves her forehead bare. But Moira is also pictured in three-quarter view, turned partly away from the camera. This angle naturally alters the entire shape of her face - only one side of her hair line is seen clearly, and it presents a nicely rounded sweep like the top of an oval.
In other pictures, Moira Kelly's short hair style is arranged carefully to disguise the shape of her forehead.
Nothing says celebrity hair style more than updos. They appear at all the red carpet photo calls, and discussion can move easily from any female celebrity and her hair style to updos in general.
Formal updos are a favourite celebrity hair style because they suit the flashy, show off occasions that celebrities are drawn to as readily as moths will attend the opening of a new floodlight.
Anyone can wear celebrity style hair updos, given the right occasion.
And for those other times when you want to look special, casual updos have all the appeal and none of the formality.
