Angelina Jolie frequently wears her hair in a short style that leaves her face completely exposed. But a short curly hair style is something outside her normal repertoire. She has one here, and it looks great. It must be something to do with her face shape.

Elizabeth Shue as a celebrity often has her hair in a short style or medium length cut, almost always curly. But her hair styles are different from the open face style favoured by Angelina Jolie in her picture.

This tousled celebrity has her hair in a short style that smoothes off the edges of her forehead, softening by association the line of her jaw and chin which, otherwise, appear more squared than rounded and oval. She could bring her hair down longer to soften the jaw, but this would risk adding a sense of greater width precisely at the point she wants her face to look narrower.

Rebecca Romijn, by contrast, wears a celebrity hair short style that almost completely envelops her face. As gorgeous as she is, her face is rounder than the classic oval of beauty would dictate, and she invariably dilutes that width with carefully arranged, cheek-narrowing strands of her naturally curly, wavy hair.

The classic curly celebrity hair short style is Molly Ringwald's teen mop that stops at the ears, covering her forehead almost entirely. Her face is basically a long heart shape, wide at the forehead and narrow at the chin. What can be seen of her face, which is everything from the eyes down, appears nicely oval. Her chin may be the tiniest bit narrower than she'd prefer, but a set of small earrings provides distraction, and an illusion of width.

Gillian Anderson's curly celebrity hair is not a short style at all, but its length is lost in the shadows behind her. What's visible is her face, with her hair pulled right back along the hair line. It's not her best look. Her face can appear at times long, with a very narrow chin. Her classic hair styles have always been medium length cuts that added width alongside her cheeks while blurring the shape of her forehead. Short hair styles tend not to show her at her best.

Ashley Judd's curly celebrity hair short style in this gallery must be one of the few hair styles that don't sit well on her. It's a funny shape anyway, tapering upwards like a Mayan pyramid covered in jungle overgrowth. The effect here is to make Ashley Judd look oddly pear shaped - in the face, that is - with the lower half wider and rounder than the top. You can't take anything away from her smile, which as always lights her eyes with genuine pleasure - but she's achieved a very rare thing in this image, by making herself look something less than stunning.

Jenny Garth's celebrity hair short style has something classical and 1950s about it. Maybe it's the black and white photo itself. The rough side part, the sweep of blonde hair across the forehead almost recalls Marilyn Monroe hair styles. Without that her face would adopt too readily the shape of a heart - wide at the forehead and brow, narrow at the chin.

Actresses Jessica lange, Susan Sarandon and Elizabeth Taylor have very similar short hair styles in this gallery. Bridget Fonda's celebrity hair short style is like a tousled, wavy version of Molly Ringwald's mop, and Lisa Rinna's is something in between - lots of volume, and lots of height.

Annie Potts, too, uses height in her hair. It improves the proportions of her face which, otherwise, looks a little bit squat, or square.
